Let's get this started with a little soul. This watch is the Doctor's horcrux, lulz.
Oh, Martha, I'm so glad they taught you things like this in med school. You rock.
Professor Smith raises the alarm. I love how he is just so very human
here.Bring out your dead!
I love how the Headmaster assumes shenanigans but immediately kicks into military mode the moment he realises that they're not messing about with all of this. Poor kids. The darkness must go/down the river of night's dreaming/flow morphia slow/let the sun and light come streaming/into my life...
Your arm's off!No, it's not!
What's that, then?... Tis but a flesh wound!
I love Martha here and her Ravenclaw reaction. "OH I AM CLEVER, LET ME JUST SHOW YOU."
Oh, the green-face blocking of the TARDIS. Awesome.
And some more watch-fondling. Tim really does love to, ah, play with that watch...
Little boys with guns. Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori
And then the Professor with a rifle. I love how he was never able to bring himself to shoot it.
Oh, children crying as they realise what they are doing. I think this really captures the tone of those years just before the onset of WW2 so wonderfully.
QUICK! THE SLASHERS ARE COMING FOR US! SOON THEY WILL BE SHIPPING US WITH OTHER BOYS! NOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo!! RUUUUUUN!
I loved this bit, with John Smith's horrifying reaction to everything, and that he just wants to be human and himself and have a life. It was just so good
This bit is why he got the job. What a stupendous speech and perfectly delivered.
More wonderful reactions from Smith. Cue the AU...
Here's where I started to cry.
And here's where I kept crying.
Lulz, the Doctor fools everyone. Good job, man.
And here we see that switch... and the Family realises they are fucked.
"By Jove, I do believe these are lead pipes!"
Feel the wrath of the Time Lord.
And don't forget his Chucks. <3
All I have to say to this is creeeeeeeepy
Oh, Doctor. I'm glad Joan was clever enough to realise how painful it would be to travel with the Doctor and still be in love with John Smith. Besides, two companions suffering unrequited love? Would have been a bit too much, really.
I love this. She is still wearing her old wedding band (as is appropriate) and I love that they show the two things that tie her to her two loves - the wedding band and John Smith's journal.
Awwwww, Doctor hugs.
And I started to cry again. I don't know why; Veteran's day here in the States has never been particularly meaningful to me, but Armistice Day in England was always very poignant. I think the national unity under the symbol of the poppy was always very striking.
And the Bible verses she's reading here are so appropriate (as I know they planned it to be, but still!). I love that they show up again - and that Tim still has the watch.
So that's it. I loved this set of episodes oh so much.
